Predictably, she drives a wedge between the besties, who must choose between their friendship and the bottom line when they’re pitted against a rival upstart company. However, kids may be picking up more than one new phrase to share with the family. Lots of action, appealing visuals and funny one liners, there’s definitely enough on-screen time of Ted and Tim to keep the original Boss Baby fans happy. Salma Hayek sashays in as a shark-like cosmetics honcho who wants to invest heavily in Mel and Mia’s business. At 1 hour and 47 minutes long, this film is definitely on pace with the usual kid-friendly animated films. It taps into McCarthy's patented sass but ultimately fails to deliver because a) it dilutes her comic powers with superficial storytelling and odd pacing and b) it peppers bracingly refreshing moments with tired, old jokes.

The two have parlayed their knack for makeovers into a cute but faltering business with two employees, played with scene-stealing finesse by Jennifer Coolidge and Billy Porter. It’s rare, though, that you have characters inside a film pointing out its myopia.

Sometimes Hollywood feels hopelessly out of touch, like a movie’s director and writers haven’t set foot outside the studio walls in years.
